 Here are some words of wisdom, comfort, and encouragement by and for freelancers. Give your soul some comfort food! Feel free to add your own.

  • Define the rules in your work
  • What works today won’t always work tomorrow
  • Side projects for times of unemployment
  • Separate ego and business- bad professional experience doesn’t mean you are a bad person
  • A residency for free time- doing nothing
  • Take breaks, holidays, get massages
  • Love yourself
  • Let yourself be inefficient
  • Use any space to work- outside of office/theater
  • Know your limits
  • Be aware of “selling out” (working artistically only for money)
  • Make rules for yourself
  • Shut off the phone/computer sometimes
  • Physical activities- exercise!
  • Have babies/pets
  • Learn new skills, study, invest in your own development
  • Take yourself out of your comfort zone, surprise yourself, scare yourself
  • Don’t be secretive- share what you are doing with the world- talk to people, see people
  • Don’t waste energy on negativity
  • Take yourself out of your daily grind

  • Learn from the model of an institution
  • Have a mentor
  • Re-education regarding culture/philosophy
  • Keep separate notebooks and folders so you can find things quicklyorganize!

  • Learn to say no so that you can take a break when you need it
